The Power of Propaganda

There was a time when those around Russel Brantley would describe him as American as they come. From Texas, a southerner at heart, he should have been far insulated from Russian propaganda. Only it got to him too and like a deadly virus infected his every waking thought. Brantley was so sold out to the ways of Russia, that he eventually became a pro-Putin blogger, echoing every Kremlin talking point, throwing his birth country under the proverbial fascist tank. 

The virus spread and ate away at him, until there wasn't much of Russel left. Now fully manipulated by Vladimir Putin, Brantley's strings tightened and pulled. Eventually, he left the comfortability of the United States for a new life in Russia. Filled with hopes and dreams, he left his family in the States and started a new life with a Russian bride. 

Ever hopeful, Brantley pursued the dream he was sold on social media platforms like X and TikTok. Only there was never really any dream. Instead, Brantley found himself inside a nightmare from which he would never wake up. 

The Fascist State

Like many other foreigners in Russia, Brantley was forced to serve in the Russian military, so he could prove that he was a real ruskie and not some American affiliated spy. Brantley obliged, often carrying a camera and singing the praises of a military that illegally invaded Ukraine, raping and murdering civilians, while trafficking their children. Brantley joined the cause to fight, "against fascism and communism," but in a twist of irony lost his own life at the hands of fascists and communists.

The Rape and Murder

The Russian military had enough of Brantley. Despite uprooting himself from the United States and dedicating his entire existence to Russia, his fellow compatriots serving in the Russian military mistook Brantley for a NATO spy, and simply grew tired of the American with the camera. Brantley was no longer useful, and as a result was on dangerous ground.

Intel on the ground suggests that after an altercation with soldiers in his ranks, Brantley was raped and murdered by the same military he had served with for over ten years. He gave his entire existence to the cause of Russia, but ultimately failed their impossible test and as a result, will never return home to his family in the United States. 

Why?

Some believe that Brantley's real crime was filming the aftermath of Russian attacks in Ukraine, which showed the deliberate targeting of civilians, many raped, murdered and trafficked. The men he served with may not have liked the truth getting out there to a world increasingly unsympathetic to Russia's cause. Desperately wanting to hide their most animalistic urges, they decided to do whatever was necessary to punish Brantley, to make an example of him. One after the next, they took turns raping Brantley, before murdering a loyal Russian sympathizer, deeply entrenched in the Kremlin propaganda machine. Brantley and his dreams were dead. 

CEO of Hermitage Capital, Bill Browder, recalls a time in the 1930s when some flocked to Russia to partake in what they believed would be a utopia, 

"In the 1930s lots of American communists emigrated to Russia to pursue their vision of socialist utopia. In spite of their idealism, they were routinely rounded up and sent to the gulags where most of them died. Seems the same thing happened here in a more twisted version of the story."

Such history was lost on Bentley and he paid with his own life. 

Perhaps it is best summed up by Richard Hanania. Hanania, who is the President of the Center for the Study of Partisanship and Ideology, describes the ways of Russia in the following, 

"This is the Russian cause. Robbing and killing at random, even their own supporters, upset that Ukrainian civilization don't want this Russian civilization brought to them."
